The talk was published in Mar 2011 and it was from Egyptian Cairo.
In the Egyptian revolution 2.0, everyone has contributed something. For 30 years, Egypt had been in downhill. Everything was going bad. Everything was going wrong. They only ranked high when it comes to poverty, corruption, lack of freedom of speech, lack of political activism. People were extremely frustrated but kept silent. The reason speaker thought because the psychological barrier of fear. The majority was scared and not want to get in trouble.
A dictator cannot live without the force. They want to make people live in fear. Until coming internet, it helped people to connect. People shared the same dream, care their freedom.
When Khaled Saeed was kiled in June 2010. The photo was horrible. He was tortured, brutally tortured to death. But the answer from the regimes was: “He chocked on a pile of hash. He’s a criminal. He’s someone who escaped from all these bad things.” Because of the internet, people knew the truth. This could happen to anyone and that guy could be everyone’s brother.
An anonymous administrator was basically inviting people to join the page on internet. In a few days, tens of thousands of people there - angry Egyptians who were asking the ministry of interior affairs to give the justice. Due to the regime didn’t listen, people started contributing ideas. At the end, people actually went to the street to have a silent stand. thousand of people in Alexandria went to street. Internet connected people from the virtual world to real word.
However, regime didn’t learn anything. They were attacking people, abusing them.
People were taking shots and photos; people were reporting violations of human rights in Egypt; people were suggesting ideas: people were creating videos. Everything was done by the people to the people via Internet.
The speaker was detained for 12 days during that revolution. When he was out, he thought it was 12 years. He notched in the square that fear is no longer fear. Everyone was so empowered and asking for their rights. Hundreds of thousands of Chiristians are going to pray and tens of thousands of Muslims are going to protect them, and then hundreds of thousands of Muslims are going to pray and tens of thousands of Christians are going to protect them. This whole revolution showed to people how ugly such a regime was and how great and amazing the Egyptian people.
They won!!! Egyptians have proven to be true, that the power of the people is much stronger than the people in power.
