It is an interesting topic. The speaker run a data visualisation design company, and they design and develop ways to make information accessible through visual representations.
Data are just a tool they use to represent reality. She made two examples, one was from her dad experiences and another one was from United States’s presidential election. Those two data failed - and pretty spectacular. People believed in data, but what happened, even with the most respected newspaper,.
There was one Italy woman came to them with a lot of data. She has been the first Italian woman astronaut, and she was being launched on a six-month-long expedition to the International Space Station. She wanted to do something meaningful with the data to reach out to people. They created a connection between here and all of the people looking at her from below. They designed and developed a web application that simply lets people say hello to her and she was actually waving back everyday using Twitter from the ISS.
Data powered the experience, but stories of human beings were the drive.
The speaker run an experiment with the other women who lived in London. They started a communication using only data, no other language, no other technology, every week for one year. They used their personal data to get to know each other - personal data around weekly shared mundane topics, from feelings to the interactions with their partners, from the compliments they received to the sounds of their surroundings.
It took one year. They became much more in tune with theirselves, much more aware of their behaviours and their surroundings.
using data not only become more efficient, using data can become more humane.
