bet one's bottom dollar


bet one's bottom dollar最初是美国西部牛仔之间的常用语。我们知道bottom是底部，而bottom dollar是口袋底下剩下的最后那一块钱，所以bet one's bottomdollar原来的意思是尽其所有地打赌。什么情况下人们才会这样做呢？多半是对自己打赌会赢非常有把握的情况下才敢于冒这个风险。我们看这个例子吧。


这里的习惯用语bet my bottom dollar on something意思是“对某事有绝对的把握”。

To burn the midnight oil 的字面意思是“烧午夜的油”，我们用个短语来表达一个人“挑灯夜战，开夜车”，熬夜学习或工作。
