《Charlotte's Web》：所有的善良都会被温柔以待

本书作者E.B.White，共写过三部童话：《小老鼠斯图尔特》（Stuart Little)（1945）、《夏洛蒂的网》(Charlotte's Web)（1952）、《天鹅的喇叭》(The Trumpet of The Swan)（1970），在美国《出版周刊》1976年进行的读者调查中，《夏洛蒂的网》位居“美国十佳儿童文学名著”的首位，曾经有小读者问他的故事是否是真实的，他说：No，they're imaginary tales…but real life is only one kind of life, there is also life of imagination.
故事开始于8岁的小女孩Fern从父亲Mr.Arable手中救下一只发育不良的小猪，并且给他取名为Wilbur，像照顾小孩子一样的照顾它，用奶瓶给它喂奶，应小推车带它出去玩，每天放学后来陪它。
Wilbur五周大时，Mr.Arable准备卖了它，在母亲的建议下，他们将它送到了隔壁Uncle Homer的农场Zuckermams. 在这里小猪Wilbur开启了一段奇幻之旅。
在这个畜棚里，生活着马、羊、鹅，一只叫Templeton的老鼠，还有Wilbur的朋友Charlotte，一只外表看起来大胆残忍，但内心却和善、忠诚和真实的蜘蛛。
Wilbur是人们所说的Spring Pig，就是春天出生的小猪，这意味它将面临所有Spring Pig都将面临的问题：就是会在圣诞节被屠杀被人们食用。
Charlotte承诺要救小猪Wilbur，她不停的思考着方法。She was naturally patient. She knew from experience that if she waited long enough, a fly would come think to her web; and she felt sure that if she thought long enough about Wilbur's problem, an idea would come to her mind.
七月中旬的一天早上她终于想到了一个方法——用她最擅长最熟悉的织网来让人们意识到Wilbur的特殊性，来解救他。“SOME PIG”，这是第一个网，它成功吸引到了人们的注意，小镇的人们纷纷前来看望Wilbur和这个特别的网。
几天后，Charlotte召集动物们开了会，并想出第二个词，“TERRIFIC”，看到这个网时异常开心激动的Mr.Zuckerman决定带Wilbur去参加9月6日的Country Fair.
Templeton带来了第三个词“RADIANT”，每次Charlotte编织出不同的网时，Wilbur都尽量去表现的符合这些特质，Some Pig 、Terrific、Radiant. Wilbur成了名猪，它乐此不疲地享受着Charlotte为它带来的荣誉与注意力，希望可以在Country Fair上赢得奖牌和钱，以此获得活下去的机会。
Charlotte和Templeton跟着Wilbur来到了Fair，为了帮助Wilbur赢得奖品，Charlotte耗尽力气织了最后一个字“HUMBLE”，然后开始孕育它的蜘蛛宝宝。Charlotte成功帮助Wilbur赢得了特殊奖项，并为Mr.Zuckerman赢得了25美元的奖金。
"Why did you do all this formeq?" Wilbur asked. "I don't deserve it. I've never done anything for you."
"You have been my friend," replied Charlotte. "That in itself is a tremendous thing. I wove my webs for you because I liked you. After all, what's a life, anyway? We're born, we live a little while, we die. A spider's life can't help being something of a mess, with all this trapping and eating flies. By helping you, perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a trifle. Heaven knows anyone's life can stand a little of that."
Charlotte太老太虚弱已经不能跟他们回畜棚了，Wilbur请求Templeton帮忙就她的514只蜘蛛宝宝带回去了。第二天Charlotte死去了。
Nobody, of the hundreds of people that had visited the Fair, knew that a grey spider had played the most important part of all. No one was with her when she died.
春去秋来，日复一日，年复一年，Wilbur得到Mr.Zuckerman的悉心照料，在畜棚里过着平静的日子。但是他不曾忘记Charlotte。Although he loved her children and grandchildren dearly, none of the new spiders ever quite took her place in his heart. she was in a class by herself. It's not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good whiter. Charlotte was both.
