What are the names of the two creatures introduced in Chap. 1?    

An Ape is called Shift. A Donkey called Puzzle

What do their names make you think of?  Do their names seem appropriate?  

From the chapter, I think of their name is suitable for their personalities. After checking docs or searching on web, the name of “Shift” is like shifty (being dishonest) and the word also has the mean of “to make someone else responsible for sth, especially for something bad that has happened”.  

The donkey’s name is Puzzle, Puzzle is a suitable name for it. It doesn’t complained and just do whatever shift told him to do, even if it knows it is wrong. What shift said and what shift do confuse it, but it still obey shift’s order.

How would you describe personalities?  Their character?   How are they different?  

Ape is clever, but he is dishonest and tricky.

Puzzle is dense and he has a good heart. Puzzle never complained, he would sigh and do whatever Shift had said.

Their characters are different. Puzzle like Shift’s servant, he is tricked to do many things that Shift ask to.  Puzzle is loyal and frank, he can’t refuse to shift. Shift also is selfish, crafty and self-righteous. He distorts the facts and makes lies to achieve his own purposes.
