Why you should know how much your coworkers get paid

Most companies would tell the employees they shouldn't ask others about salary. And we are not supposed to tell our neighbors, definitely not office neighbors.

What if we had total pay transparency?

Pay secrecy is actually a way to save a lot of money. For those economists, it calls "information asymmetry (不对称)". When in hiring or promotion or annual raise discussions, an employer can use that secrecy to save a lot of money. Economists warn that information asymmetry can cause markets to go awry (扭曲的).  Information asymmetry, pay secrecy, makes it easier to ignore the discrimination, especially betwwen the gender.
