Why you should know how much your coworkers get paid

How much do we get paid? It is always a question.
But another question is: How much do you think the person sitting next to you gets paid?  Should we know about that?
Most employees have no idea how their pay compares to their peers.

Most companies would tell the employees they shouldn't ask others about salary. And we are not supposed to tell our neighbors, definitely not office neighbors.

reason:
1)  there would be arguments
2) there would be fights
3) there might even be a few people who quit

4) employees more likely to feel underpaid or maybe even discriminated.

The speaker has been studying the corporate and entrepreneurial leaders, and the question of pay keeps coming up.

It turns out that sharing salaries openly across a company makes for a better workplace for both the employee and for the organization.

What if secrecy is actually the reason for all that strife (争吵;冲突)?
What if removed that secrecy?
What if openness actually increased the sense of fairness and collaboration inside a company?

What if we had total pay transparency?

Pay secrecy is actually a way to save a lot of money. For those economists, it calls "information asymmetry (不对称)". When in hiring or promotion or annual raise discussions, an employer can use that secrecy to save a lot of money. Economists warn that information asymmetry can cause markets to go awry (扭曲的).  Information asymmetry, pay secrecy, makes it easier to ignore the discrimination, especially betwwen the gender.

They did an experiment with sharing salaries for years. The results have been amazing. When people know how they're being paid and how that pay compares to their peers, they are more likely to work hard to improve their performance. The speaker suggested that we should know how much we get paid and the one who sit next to you.
